I started these portraits with a simple concept: people in their rooms. For IB, I decided to start exploring the relationship we have with a place that has stayed static through the transience of our lives.
This series, inspired by the candid portraiture of Petra Collins, strove to juxtapose the static nature of our spaces with the dynamic nature of their owners. While our bedrooms do change over time, they tend to be a constant within our hectic lives. I limited subjects to those close to me in order to authentically capture intimate moments. The images have minimal editing and intend to reflect the relationship between dwellings and dwellers.

Here are some digital landscapes I've been working on the last few weeks. I took these over Thanksgiving break when I was in Kootenay National Park in Canada. I tried to capture the empty, wild feel that the landscape has as it is so remote in the winter.

This is my comprehensive portfolio from Photo 3/4, with a 10 photo edition from Digital 1/2 as I plan on taking 5/6. My favorite pieces are the toned landscapes and my polaroid emulsion. I think the strongest piece is the black and white digital landscape of Zion National Park.

- For me, beauty in relating to the natural world is the experience of feeling peace and viewing the purity of an untouched landscape, separate from human intervention. It also is when you experience the scale ofthe natural world, like the feeling you get when you realize you can't see the other side of the ocean.
Think about a time that you experienced that beauty in nature. Write what your experience was.

- This spring break I went to Zion and Bryce national parks. They are preserved well because of the national funding for these parks. We woke up at 4 one morning and hiked 6 miles in headlamps to watch the sun rise in the morning. Nobody was there and it was one of the more zen/peaceful moments I have every experienced, seeing something so grand have the sun light it up with the orange nice morning light.

Annie Leibovitz is arguably the most well known and highly acclaimed modern portrait photographer. She has two very different sides of her work, a candid reportage side and a staged fashion and celebrity size. Leibovitz's photos are intended to be both aesthetically pleasing, often minimalist, and thought provoking. Personally, I prefer her candid photography, especially of the Stones, because the "heroin chic" and candid aesthetic really appeals to me in a lot of her work. Leibovitz is so famous because of her subjects, celebrities, and her pioneering efforts in journalistic and portrait photography.
As a student photographer, Leibovitz joined the Rolling Stone magazine as a photographer. Annie Leibovitz was named chief photographer of Rolling Stone magazine in 1973 and joined Rolling Stone's (the band) on their 1975 tour to photograph the band. This photo is from that era in her work:

Alfred Stieglitz was born in Hoboken, New Jersey and educated as an engineer in Germany. Stieglitz returned to New york in 1890 to prove that photography was a medium as capable of artistic expression as painting or sculpture. He was known for his conviction about the aesthetic potential of the medium and published multiple essays on this topic. After World War I, Stieglitz catalysed the transition to modern art and his photos were no longer as heavily manipulated. His series of portraits Georgia O'Keeffe was well received and is very well known, and encapsulates several modernist ideas about the sense of self, a changing personality, and the relativity of truth in a modern world.

This photograph is part of a series of more than 300 images of O'Keeffe between 1917 and 1937. It demonstrates Stieglitz's belief that portraiture concerned more than merely the face and should illustrate a person's entire experience. On this topic he claimed "To demand the portrait that will be a complete portrait of any person, is as futile as to demand that a motion picture be condensed into a single still."

- I think that a photograph could change the world. So many photos are iconic, like the portrait of Fidel Castro, the tank man at Tiananmen Square, and Dorothea Lange's migrant mother. The power of an image is that its tangible and when an image circulates it has the ability to humanize subjects and force people to accept realities of genocide, suffering, and injustice around the world.

- This image is a (more) properly exposed backlit image. It looks to me like they metered on the front of the wall, because it is a midtone grey. The mood is very cold and moody, which you can see by the way the smoke is highlighted and so is the snow, and the urban feel with darker lighting. If the photo had been metered more as a silhouette the image would have had a less intimate feel, be less personal and the subject may have been more enigmatic.

The Liberation of Buchenwald, April 1945
Bourke White was able to capture the image of the people held in the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. This was one of the first published images of the death camps in Germany, and shows the ordinary Germans "horrified by the actions of their compatriots". It was published in Life Magazine
