Abstraction/Depth of Field Prework

Abstraction: Freedom from representational qualities in art, the process of considering something independently of its associations, attributes, or concrete accompaniments
Abstract Photography:
Parisian Rooftops by Michael Wolf
Chicago Lights by Satoki Nagata
Depth of field is deep in the first image. The artist uses it to capture the whole image, which is a mixture of shapes, colors, and textures. It helps with the abstract quality of this image because it fills the image with all these elements, not blurring any out and makes this flatter image that is less definable.
Depth of field is shallow in the second image. The artist effectively focusses in on the raindrops and subject, and not the background. It contributes to the image because the raindrops being in focus add an ethereal effect and frees the image from more generic documentary photography.
Shallow Depth of Field - Examples:
Portrait: Sharon Tate by Philippe Halsman
Still Life: Pom Pom Dahlias by Tom Baril
