Annie Leibovitz is arguably the most well known and highly acclaimed modern portrait photographer. She has two very different sides of her work, a candid reportage side and a staged fashion and celebrity size. Leibovitz's photos are intended to be both aesthetically pleasing, often minimalist, and thought provoking. Personally, I prefer her candid photography, especially of the Stones, because the "heroin chic" and candid aesthetic really appeals to me in a lot of her work. Leibovitz is so famous because of her subjects, celebrities, and her pioneering efforts in journalistic and portrait photography.


As a student photographer, Leibovitz joined the Rolling Stone magazine as a photographer. Annie Leibovitz was named chief photographer of Rolling Stone magazine in 1973 and joined Rolling Stone's  (the band) on their 1975 tour to photograph the band. This photo is from that era in her work:
